Five (Surprisingly Affordable) Ways to Add Style to Your Home

Our latest blog, “5 Ways to Add Style to Your Home” offers some unexpectedly affordable ways to add your own unique touches to your favourite space – where you live.

Here at MyWoodFlooring, it goes without saying that in the world of interior design, we’re all over wooden flooring.

Not literally, of course, but with over 25 years’ experience, stunning wooden floors are our speciality. Investing in bespoke flooring is such a positive thing to do. With regular but low-effort care, it will last for years, look fabulous and lift your spirits time and time again.

But, we don’t just love floors; we love super-stylish interiors in general – as do you.

Time for a Change?

Although memories may be starting to fade, we’ve come through a couple of tough years; staring at four walls during the long months of the pandemic may have inspired you to think more about your home and how you’d like it to reflect more of your personality.

You don’t need to be a design expert to know that just a few changes could make all the difference. Whether you love the minimal look, a country cottage vibe, or a classic, more traditional character, it’s easy to achieve an aesthetic that genuinely feels like you. And one that will look great, regardless of your space or budget.

What if 5 ways to add style to your home was a really easy thing to do? Well, in truth, it is.

Think about the following to help you get started.

1. Consider Colour

Colour is an essential element in any space; we all need some of it in our lives.

The first thing people notice and the impression they take away with them is colour. It can set the mood and tone of your home. As you’re aware, some shades are energetic, whilst others are much more calming.

Adding personality with your favourite shades is fun, but be mindful: just because you adore purple, you may not wish to adorn the whole house with bright shades of Cadbury’s chocolate-type branding. The people who share your life may not be such great fans.

On the other hand, there is room to be courageous. You could, for example, wield your paintbrush to:

Paint the front door. A freshly painted front door suggests a well-kept property and starts speaking of your style immediately. Red, yellow or even pink = bold. Black, or navy = sophisticated. And so on.

Paint your ceiling. It’s a lively touch, and it will be noticed.

Add colour in the kitchen. Brightly coloured appliances are fashionably European, and can look ultra-stylish. But, equally, your kitchen cabinets don’t have to be white or magnolia now, do they?

Paint your furniture. You can add new life to chairs, stools, bookcases or tables that may have seen better days. It takes a while to get it right – you’ll need to prepare the wood and finish it carefully, but it can look outstanding.

2. Update Your Lighting

Little things can make a significant difference, and we’re lucky to live in a world where there is a massive choice of lighting on the market. From table, desk and floor lamps that you can move around to ceiling lighting solutions that need an electrician’s skills, lighting is, we think, a bit of a thing.

Lighting design is a sought-after skill, so if an extension or renovation project is on the cards, do think about getting this right the first time with the help of a professional.

However, replacing outdated or old-fashioned ceiling lights doesn’t have to be budget-busting and can uplift your environment.

Here’s a top tip that may surprise you: It’s worth exploring your local DIY stores for wallet-friendly choices, as there are lighting treats a-plenty to be found. Not least, that one beginning with “B”, and ending with “Q”. We kid you not.

3. Add Some (or a Lot) Of You – and Your Family

Number 3 in our 5 ways to add style to your home blog is super-easy to do: Framed family photographs will catch the eye and remind you of your loved ones’ paths through life. Birthdays, anniversaries, weddings – all joyful occasions that you’ll want to capture and remember.

Not only are they talking points, they’re also exceptionally precious; many people claim that the first things they’d grab in a fire are photographs of the family and no wonder. In fact, we’d go as far as to say: don’t let your children grow up as jpeg files. Instead, print off your photos, frame them and display them in beautiful contrasting frames on some of your surfaces.

And, how about your own artwork, or a painting by someone you care about? Or someone you’ve never met or heard of? Mark for your local Sunday market. You could also discover something striking and quirky at a weekend bootfair, crafted with colours and shades that suit your room perfectly.

Likewise, don’t hide that heirloom in the attic. Put in on display.

4. Have a Focal Point in a Room

Did you know that a focal point is one of the fundamental components of interior design?

It’s the first thing people see when they walk into a room, and should be the most noticeable feature based on the arrangement of your space. That is, it should work slightly harder to draw they eye more than any other feature.

Your ideal focal point could be somewhere people gather, like a dining table, a kitchen island, a beautiful bay window, or a fireplace – with a real fire, for instance. Then, you build the rest of the room around it.

Mostly, your sofa will take centre stage in your living room, and where you place it will be vital, as you want it to be an attractive draw for people to graduate towards. Nevertheless, many aspects discussed in this blog could be focal points, too: striking lighting can play a key role in a low-key, neutral room. Or, a room could be all about its colour – or even the texture, shape and patterns of your décor.

Food for thought.

And Finally…

5. Those Finishing Touches

Nobody likes flowers. Said no one, ever.

To be serious, a vase or bowl with flowers that complement your colour scheme will always look absolutely and utterly beautiful. In the same way – plants in pots, and other freestanding greenery are an excellent way to bring the outside in.

Rugs and throws are an amazing idea, and here at MyWoodFlooring, we love them.

They look stunning over our bespoke wooden floors and can turn a space from drab to fab in no time at all. Simply try them out in various spaces until you find a layout that speaks to you.

So, now could be the time to be your own interior designer. It’s fun, and with a bit of effort, and not too much outlay, you could give your home a completely new look and feel. Feeling creative? Great, let’s get started. Get in touch with MyWoodFlooring, we’d be delighted to speak to you.
